The Estlander flap is a well-vascularized flap thanks to the superior labial artery,5 which supplies both the cutaneous lip and the vermillion. The main disadvantage

Balance between the lips is preserved because the resulting length of the donor lip is proportional to the length of the recipient lip. The new lip segment regains motor innervation within 8 weeks (34). The Estlander flap is a hardy local flap which can be used to reconstruct defects of 1/3-2/3 of both the upper and lower lip. Herein, we describe the operative technique of the Estlander flap for lip reconstruction.
Gustaf Axel Estlander (18 September 1876 – 1 December 1930) was a Finnish architect and one of the most successful Scandinavian yacht designers of the early 20th century. He was born and educated in Finland , later set up a yacht yard in Germany, and spent his final years in Sweden . Martin Estlander. Stockholm (HedgeFonder.nu) – Martin Estlander, founder of Estlander & Partners (E&P), has managed institutional assets through systematic trading strategies since 1991. Based in Vasa, Finland, total assets of around 800 million EUR are today managed through E&P’s three strategies Global Markets, Alpha Trend and Freedom. Summary The Estlander flap is an axial-pattern, lip-switch technique used to reconstruct lip defects that include the oral commissure.

Estlander flaps are named for Jakob August Estlander of Finland, who first described the flap in 1872. These flaps essentially are Abbe flaps for the commissure. Estlander originally rotated a lateral upper lip flap around the commissure to reconstruct a lateral lower lip defect. 27 Secondary revision is necessary to recreate the sharp angle of the commissure.
The medial limb of the flap is convexly curved. Figure 1(17) - ESTLANDER FLAP(4-17) :- "v" shaped incision diagrammed around lower lip lesion, and lesion is removed, proposed flap designed in upper lip and is designed with height 1-2mm greater than the defect.(4) An Estlander flap was created by incising the nasolabial fold and rotating the upper lip subunit to the lower lip. A lower lip flap was created by making an incision along the mento-labial crease and dissecting along a plane superior to the obicularis oris muscle. 40525 Full thickness, reconstruction with local flap (eg, Estlander or fan) 40527 Full thickness, reconstruction with cross lip flap (Abbe-Estlander) 40530 Resection of lip, more than one-fourth, without reconstruction (For reconstruction, see 13131 et seq) REPAIR (CHEILOPLASTY) 40650 Repair lip, full thickness; vermilion only Charlie Estlander. A flap is created from the lower lip and sewn into position in the upper lip. The width of the flap is equal to one-half the width of the defect. The flap is based medially (towards the center) on a relatively thin pedicle. 5.

Compare: Abbe flap . The Estlander" flap is similar to the Abbe flap, but in volves rotating the upper lip tissue around the lateral edge of the mouth (Fig 6). It is best used in situations where the defect involves the oral commissure, so that the flap not only repairs the lower lip defect, but is the … Repair of Lip Commissure Defects With Estlander Flaps Simon G. Repair of Lip Commissure Defects With Estlander Flaps Simon G. Talbot Julian J. Pribaz DEFINITION Defects of the lips may occur from malignancy (most frequently squamous cell carcinoma followed by basal cell carcinoma), trauma, vascular malformations, or infections.1 There is disagreement in the literature about terminology. A reverse Abbe flap (Estlander-Abbe flap) is the exact same flap only taken from the upper lip to reconstruct lower lip defects not involving the commissure. We will use the technique for the traditional Abbe flap for this chapter, but recognize the reverse flap is the same technique based on the superior labial artery. Medical definition of Estlander flap: lip reconstruction that is similar to the Abbe flap but involves defects including the commissure of the lip and a flap of tissue rotating around the lateral edge of the mouth. Abbe-Estlander flap. The procedure was performed under general anesthesia.
